Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has declared that the use of SIM cards with registrations in someone else's name is an illicit practice and identifies that all mobile phone connections should be registered with respect to their real owners.
Issuing a statement on Thursday, the PTA advised all mobile phone users to immediately register in their personal names all active SIMs and telecommunication connections in their custody.
“Using another person’s SIM is now considered a violation of the telecommunication regulations, and action will be taken,” the regulatory body said.
To clarify the issue of liability, the PTA explained that the registered user of the number would bear the “sole liability for all activities done using the SIM card.”
This encompasses phone calls, short message services, and internet browsing, as well as abuse associated with the number. A crime or abuse associated with a particular SIM number would make the registered user of the number liable.
The regulatory body clarified that adherence to telecommunication regulations is mandatory rather than optional. If these regulations are breached, a fine, SIM card suspension, and/or legal action may follow depending on the nature of misuse that took place.
Customers are urged to check their registration status concerning their SIM cards and rectify any unregistered connections not in their own name. According to the PTA, this will enable them to avoid service disconnection and consequent legal proceedings.
