The federal government is anticipated to approve an increase in petroleum prices, effective October 1, with the hike ranging from Rs1.97 to Rs4.65 per litre.
According to the sources, petrol may become Rs1.97 per litre more expensive, while high-speed diesel (HSD) may rise by Rs2.48 per litre.
Light diesel oil (LDO) is expected to see an increase of Rs1.76 per litre, and kerosene oil could rise by Rs4.65 per litre.
These adjustments at the refinery level may impact ex-depot prices, the rates at which fuel is sold to consumers at the pump.
The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) will send a price summary to the Ministry of Finance via the Petroleum Division. Importantly, the new rates will be officially announced after final approval from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
If approved, the new petroleum prices will further squeeze household budgets, specifically for low- and middle-income families already struggling with record-high inflation, soaring electricity tariffs, and escalating food costs.
Currently, petrol is priced at Rs264.61 per litre, while high-speed diesel costs Rs272.77 per litre.
Earlier, the government kept petrol prices unchanged, while the cost of high-speed diesel was increased by Rs2.78 per litre.
