Adobe has announced its plan to invest in artificial intelligence (AI), and decided to shut down its 2D animation software, Adobe Animate, which allows you to create high-quality vector graphics that are scalable, reusable, and adaptable for cartoons, banners, games, and other interactive content.
The company, in a surprise update, said enterprise customers can continue to receive technical support through March 1, 2029, to ease the transition. Other customers will have support through March of next year. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), one customer pleaded with Adobe to at least open source the software rather than abandon it.
It is surprising that Adobe can’t even recommend software that will fully replace what customers are losing with Animate; however, the company said customers with a Creative Cloud Pro plan can use other Adobe apps to “replace portions of Animate functionality.”
"We’re contacting you to let you know that Adobe will be discontinuing Adobe Animate on March 1, 2026. As an existing Animate user, you may continue to use Animate, but please note that technical support will no longer be available after March 1, 2027,” added the company.
The Adobe Animate's shut down closes a chapter that shaped how animation, interactivity, and advertising evolved on the web. From its origins in the dial-up era to its role in HTML5 creative production, Animate influenced generations of designers and developers.
However, Adobe stated that the software will continue to work for those who have it downloaded. Typically, Adobe charged $34.49 per month for the software, which dropped to $22.99 with a 12-month commitment. The annual prepaid plan was available for $263.88.
